This reviewed MSI system features an Intel i7-1185G7 processor with integrated graphics. Intel has finally released an integrated graphics solution with truly impressive graphics performance. While it may not compete with high-end NVIDIA and AMD discrete graphics cards for gaming, it is certainly more than adequate for most other tasks.
To test the system's performance, I ran a number of 4K (3840x2160@60) HDR video streams. The system handled them with ease, running smoothly and quietly. A YouTube 4K video test used by some as a benchmark showed zero frame drops at 4K resolution.
Unfortunately, the MSI does not have a built-in HDMI output. However, I used a TB3/4 to HDMI 2.1 USB-C adapter to connect to my TV. The adapter negotiated with the TV for 3840x2160 at 10-bit HDR. The results from 25-30Mbps quality 4K videos were excellent.
During video playback, the system remained cool and quiet, making it suitable for use as a laptop as well. In fact, it has been tested with one of the few available 8K 60fps (7680.4320.60) videos, and it looks fine with less than 0.1% frame drops (at 4K - I do not have an 8K monitor).
Please note that this is a 16 GB system - I would recommend anyone to get 16 GB (not 8 GB) to ensure full use - the integrated graphics may sometimes use 4-5 GB of available memory. Other features that I appreciate about the MSI include the two USB-C ports with TB4 support, the almost symmetrical keyboard that thankfully lacks a numeric keypad, the high-quality non-glossy display, the comfortable keyboard, and the excellent touchpad (which is far superior to most Windows laptops - it actually feels more like an Apple product). Overall, the system feels similar to a MacBook Air, which is a positive compared to most Windows laptops. The graphics performance is comparable to that of a previous generation laptop that a family member owns, which has an Nvidia 960 GPU. That laptop is heavier and louder, and when I tested the graphics performance, it was similar. In my tests, the 1185G7 performed similarly to the 960. This laptop is an ultralight device - light, compact, quiet, and runs cool. It has a great feeling trackpad and phenomenal performance for a minimalist system. Less is more in some ways - no discrete GPU and no numeric keypad. The Intel 1185G7 and Apple M1 represent the next generation of integrated CPU/GPU, which has more than enough speed for most everyday tasks.
What is missing from this MSI laptop? A built-in HDMI 2.1 port and wired Ethernet port would be nice additions. I would also have liked to see one more USB-A port or a 4K display option. Unfortunately, it's difficult to find a laptop without a discrete GPU. So I settled for the HD display option. I would appreciate 1TB and 2T SSD options for the price. Overall, for the price point, this ultralight laptop offers amazing performance.
